Nav Canada
« on: March 28, 2018, 10:10:29 AM »
I just received a bill for $ 71.64 from Nav Canada for " SERVICES PROVIDED OR MADE AVAILABLE" by them.
I use a GPS for my flights and do not use ADF, DME, Glide Slope or VOR services and am happy to do my flights without Nav Canada. I fly about 12 to 15 hours a year which means adding $5 to $6 per hour to the cost of flying. The USA is debating the privatization of flight services and I sent them a picture of the Canadian system to show where this could lead them.
I will contact COPA to see if there could be an exemption for small private aircraft or a reduction in fees.

Hi Hans,

but what does " SERVICES PROVIDED OR MADE AVAILABLE" actually mean?

I suppose the fact that they supply services to airlines they assume that GA needs the identical services. I think that those who fly IFR would be in that category, but the majority of VFR fliers can do nicely without NAV Canada and should not have to pay any fees as was the case before we had NAV Canada heaped upon us. Government has become the monster on Canadians' backs, extracting more and more of hard earned dollars for dubious purposes.

Since I'm based under Ottawa Terminal airspace and fly IFR a lot, I'm a heavy user of Nav Canada's services—way more than $75/year worth—so you must be helping to pay for me, too, Hans. Thanks! :)

Or talk to them on the radio? ;)

Given all the costs associated with flying..  75 bucks a year is peanuts IMO.

IMO you own a plane you pay. It would be impossible to opt out and have NavCan provide or decline any type of services based on if you paid or not.
