Instrument approaches at CYRO
« on: November 27, 2017, 03:10:13 PM »
I've just talked to Jason, the ops manager at CYRO, and it looks like we're getting instrument approaches soon. Nav Canada is now saying March 2018 (it had originally been scheduled for December). The approaches are already in the hands of Nav Canada's (graphic?) designer, and they're calling with lots of little questions, which is good news, but they're not officially approved yet.

Here are the details (which I may have gotten wrong, since it was over the phone):

1. A straight-in RNAV 09 down to 700 ft MSL / 517 ft AGL, 1½ mile viz
2. A circling RNAV A (?) towards runway 27 down to 720 ft MSL / 532 ft AGL, 1¾ mile viz

Jason and I are both puzzled about the "circling" designation for the RNAV approach towards runway 27, since it's perfectly aligned with the runway heading and threshold, and has almost the same minima. It must just barely miss some requirement for a straight-in approach, but I can't imagine anyone flying a full circuit to come back and land on 27.

I'm going to drop in and look at the draft IAP next week.

Cheers, David

It's official now—they'll be appearing in the March 29 2018 publication cycle:

RWY 27 Circling 720 (532) 1 3/4
RWY 09 LNAV 700 (517) 1 1/2
